Plastic Wise Events and Markets on Council owned/managed land | Some plastics are both a greater risk to the environment and/or are more easily avoided or replaced. Recognising this, the following products are not used, sold or distributed (unless an exemption is granted for health, wellbeing or safety reasons): Single use plastic bags, including promotional or event participant bags; single use plastic plates, bowls, cups, straws, cutlery, food containers and sachets; single use/disposable items and plastic packaging used for promotional items, giveaways and merchandise; plastic bottled water (also refer to 7.2.6 about the provision of drinking water); and balloons. 7.2.4 Some plastics remain a risk to the environment; however they are currently less easily avoided or replaced. Recognising this, if they cannot be eliminated immediately, event organisers demonstrate a shift away from the following (unless an exemption is granted for health, wellbeing or safety reasons): Single use, plastic lined and/or plastic lidded cups used for hot or cold drinks (e.g. takeaway coffee cups); single serve drinks (in addition to water) that are packaged in plastic bottles, e.g. soft drink, juice, milk, etc. (Note: also refer to Council’s Local Law 2, section 4.1.2 Glass Free Areas). soft plastic packaging including cling wrap, wrappers, bags and similar; and single use or limited use plastic items used in event infrastructure and promotion, including cable ties, course markings, decorations and giveaways. | Food Waste | Food losses and food waste | Victoria | Surf Coast | Regional |

Plasticwise Policy 2018 | To meet this Policy, Indigo Shire Council commits to: • Progressively reducing, and eventually eliminating, single use plastic bags, single use plastic water bottles, single use plastic cutlery and crockery, soft plastic food wrapping, plastic straws and balloons within council operations and at all Council-managed and civic events. • Implementing a communication and education campaign that encourages the community and traders across the Shire to progressively reduce single use plastic items, bottled water and plastic bags. • Providing support and assist organisations or individuals (external to council) to voluntarily comply with this Policy, when undertaking events and/or during their normal operations. • Providing alternatives to bottled water in Indigo Shire towns, via water fountains with water bottle refill functionality. • Implementing responsible procurement practices and working with suppliers and contractors to avoid soft plastic packaging in purchased products wherever possible. • Support and enable community groups that are driving Plasticwise and other related programs in the community. • Implementing a sound stewardship model to ensure appropriate disposal of products that council purchases and uses, including: o Ensuring the correct waste receptacles to enable source segregation of the various waste streams generated at each event are available and well signed. o Ensuring that composting occurs if compostable alternatives to single use plastics are selected. o Collecting soft plastic packaging from council operations and events (where it could not practicably be avoided, i.e. purchased products where no alternative was available) and ensuring the soft plastics are delivered to a soft plastics collection point.
