Annual Report 2018 /19 | Homelessness remains a serious concern. The City conducted its 22nd bi-annual homelessness street count in February 2019. There were 373 people sleeping rough across the local area and 522 people occupying hostel and temporary accommodation beds. The February 2019 result represents a 13 per cent increase from the February 2018 count of 329 people sleeping rough. City staff continue to work in partnership with government, non-profit philanthropic organisations and the corporate sector to reduce homelessness. In May I convened a meeting of the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors to discuss our approach to tackling the homelessness crisis impacting our cities. Annual Report 2018 /19 | In June 2019, the City announced seven entries shortlisted in the Alternative Housing Ideas Challenge. Smart homes with eye scanners, pop up shelters in unused buildings and affordable ownership models are just some of the ideas on the list. The shortlisted entries were judged out of around 230 as part of the international challenge.
