ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 This measure is the number of regulatory premises inspections carried out divided by the programmed regulatory premises inspections during a year. Regulatory premises inspections include food shop inspections, skin penetration inspections etc. This is a measure of Council’s contribution to the health and safety of the community. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 The Chiswick Community Garden at Blackwall Point Reserve was completed. The garden has been upgraded to include four garden beds growing a variety of herbs and vegetables. The garden has a new shed and seating. The space has been designed to be accessible for the whole community, with provision for wide access for wheelchairs. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 The implementation of the Chiswick Place Plan was fi nalised in June. Through the Chiswick Connects Program, Council helped hundreds of people get to know each other and connect. Additional parking spaces and cycleways were built to improve accessibility, local facilities were upgraded including Chiswick Baths and Allison Park playground, and Chiswick’s fi rst community garden was established. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 In collaboration with Inner West Neighbour Aid (IWNA), the City of Canada Bay offi cially opened the 5 Senses Garden in February 2019 at a total cost of $373,895. Designed to promote inclusion, the space provides a nature play environment and accessible community garden, offering all local residents the opportunity to become involved in food growing and other activities. The garden features local indigenous plants, bush tucker and a beautiful path painted by indigenous artist, Joe Hurst. It is a peaceful space where visitors can enjoy the sensory pleasures of fragrant plants, artwork and the sounds of children using the playground. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 Agriculture is an emerging sector for our municipality and understanding the implications of climate change on this sector is important to Council. he peri-urban climate resilient project seeks to determine how Council can support this sector and what opportunities there are through regenerative agriculture. Council has partnered with the eakin niversitys h program to undertake this work. he three-year project partnership will • provide access to academic research and resources for further intensive research • identify best practice case studies that can be used to educate current farming practitioners and encourage new investment • develop comparative models and report on dierences and benefits between best practice regenerative agricultural and conventional farming. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 Council established a partnership with Whittlesea Community Connections, Melbourne Polytechnic and Yarra Valley Water to investigate the establishment of the Whittlesea Food and Farm Collective project. The project aims to develop new agricultural practices suitable for peri-urban areas, based on recycled water and renewable energy, improving productivity and driving employment growth in agricultural areas adjoining cities. It will provide quality fresh food for up to 2,000 households facing food insecurity each year and training opportunities for students. Council supported ongoing working group meetings and assisted in the development of a business case and funding applications. he preparation of the business case was supported by a successful funding application to the epartment of nvironment, Land, ater and lanning to the value of 40,000. he partnership submied to the Commonwealth Building Beer Regions Fund to establish the hilesea Food and Farm Collective, but was ultimately unsuccessful. All parties are commied to this project and will explore further opportunities in the coming financial year to advance the project. ANNUAL REPORT 2018-19 Supporting Social Enterprise A Social Enterprise/ Social Procurement project was developed and approved for implementation beginning February 2019. The project involved the development of a social enterprise supplier database to capture the broad array of products and services (ie. lawn mowing, manufacturing, laundry, etc.) catering, delivered in the Illawarra. The data set has the potential for a selfservice web portal to enable Social Enterprises (and all other suppliers) to update their contact and service information on a regular basis.
