The program featured diverse cooking and gardening demonstrations, interactive displays and workshops, kids activities and pop up music spaces. Annual Report 2018/19 | Weeds Pressure A wide range of agricultural and environmental weeds exist within Brewarrina Shire Council. Council is a local control authority under the Biosecurity Act 2015. A local control authority has the following noxious weed control functions in relation to the area for which it is the local control authority (the local area): (a) Responsibility for the control of noxious weeds by occupiers of land (other than public authorities or local control authorities), (b) Control of noxious weeds on land owned or occupied by the local control authority and on certain roads and watercourses, rivers or inland waters as provided by this Act, (c) To ensure, so far as practicable, that owners and occupiers of land (other than public authorities or other local control authorities) carry out obligations to control noxious weeds imposed under this Act, (d) To develop, implement, co-ordinate and review noxious weed control policies and noxious weed control programs, (e) Inspection of land within the local area in connection with its noxious weed control functions, (f) To report, at the request of the Minister, on the carrying out of the local control authorities functions under this Act, (g) To co-operate with local control authorities of adjoining areas to control noxious weeds, where appropriate, (h) Any other functions that are conferred or imposed on the local control authority by or under this Act. Annual Report 2018/19 | Riverlights Multicultural Festival Over 8,000 people attended the 7th Riverlights Multicultural Festival in October, experiencing interactive stalls, dance, food, music and arts in The Levee. The park was designed based on community feedback, resulting in the creation of a unique skating facility in Maitland. ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19 | Drought Assistance Program Oberon Council coordinated a collection of non perishable items during August and September 2018 to assist local farmers. Oberon SuperIGA, Foodworks and Reliance Bank all had drop off points for the donations. We gathered items such as non perishable grocery items, toiletries, pet food and other non-perishable items. Council staff distributed the items collected to local farmers. The Oberon Correctional Services staff put together hampers and they were included in the distribution to farmers. In addition to the hampers, we were able to provide Shop Local Vouchers to local farmers to assist with supporting them and local businesses. Annual Report 2018/19 | Slow Food Earth Market recognised The Maitland Slow Food Earth Markets were the 2018 winner of the International Gigi Frassanito award at the Earth Market Summit held in Turin, Italy. Held on the first and third Thursday of the month at The Levee, the market, which showcases local produce, has continued its success as one of over 60 Earth Markets Worldwide and the first of its kind in Australia. Council has worked closely with Slow Food Hunter Valley in the form of promotion, operational guidance and approvals, established through a memorandum of understanding, to deliver produce markets in The Levee. ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19 | How to Adult – Skils4Life The Oberon Youth Council, Council’s Community Services team, Oberon CBA, Oberon Rotary and Central West Lifeline hosted the inaugural SKILLS4LIFE “HOW TO ADULT” in May 2019 as part of Youth Week. Oberon Skillz4Life was a fun, successful event at the Oberon Showground with 16 active participants. Sessions started with MoneyIn/MoneyOut where they learnt tips on responsible money management. Mayfield Garden hosted a food and nutrition afternoon, where participants helped pick edible flowers from the garden, prepare and serve dinner. Annual Report 2018/19 | A review of the Food Handling Workshop was undertaken which included the purchasing of the GlitterBug products which allowed food business owners to see the effectiveness of hand washing, as well as sanitising demonstrations using bleach and the incorporation of quiz to test their knowledge. ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19 | Seniors Festival 2019 Oberon Council’s Community Services staff took part in the NSW Seniors Festival 2019 with a day out at Mayfield Garden. Thirty seven seniors, including residents from Columbia Aged Care Services attended the bus trip to Mayfield Garden for a walk through the garden and a catered lunch. Everyone had a wonderful day out. Thank you to Oberon Hire Car, Oberon Bus Services and Mayfield Garden for helping us co-ordinate this wonderful day out for our Seniors. ANNUAL REPORT 2018/19 | The Local Environmental Plan (LEP) Review The NSW Government and Wollondilly Shire Council has signed a joint funding agreement to accelerate the review of the Local Environmental Plan (LEP). The objective of this agreement is to bring forward housing supply and housing diversity in NSW and promote housing affordability. Wollondilly Shire Council was identified by the State Government as 1 of 13 priority Councils. Priority Councils are required to update their LEP’s to complement District Plans from the Greater Sydney Commission and the Western Sydney City Deal. As a priority Council, Wollondilly has access to $2.5million of State funding under a joint funding agreement with the NSW Government to accelerate the review of the LEP. Under the agreement, Council is required to complete the review by 30 June 2020. The LEP Review program will be delivered in six phases and will include seven main project deliverables as follows: 1. Submission of LEP Review Report (completed in November 2018); 2. Submission of Project Plan (completed in January 2019); 3. Submission of draft Local Strategic Planning Statement; 4. Completion of Local Housing Strategy and specialist reports; 5. Submission of final Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS); 6. Submission of Planning Proposal to the Department for a Gateway determination; and 7. Submission of draft LEP to Department Planning, Industry and Environment to make the plan.
