Food and Beverage Guidelines Part A All food provision should:  Avoid deep fried food and heavily salted or sugared food and beverages.  Contain a variety of healthy foods wherever feasible, prioritising vegetables, legumes and fruit.  Include wholegrain options when serving grain based food.  Include reduced fat options and dairy alternatives when serving dairy products. Health Promotion through Food Provision Procedure When applying this procedure Council staff should aim to:  Ensure healthy food and beverage choices are always available at Council supported events and facilities.  Consistently present healthy food and beverage choices as appealing and attractive alternatives to unhealthy food and beverages.  Increase the availability of healthy food and beverages over time.  Provide food in an environmentally sustainable way. Health Promotion through Food Provision Procedure  Limit the quantity of meat served, prioritising lean meats, skinless poultry and fish.  Use polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, for example olive oil, avocado, fish and nuts, and avoid butter and cream where possible.  Always include vegetarian options.  Always make water available. b. Food and Beverage Guidelines Part B Where unhealthy options (such as sugary beverages and fatty foods) are available:  Care should be taken to balance their availability with healthy options, as per section 3a.  Healthy options should be displayed as or more prominently than unhealthy options. Healthy and Sustainable Food Choices Guidelines for all Council managed food services Food choices available at functions and events should aim for the following: • Predominantly plant-based foods such as fruit, vegetables, wholegrain breads and cereals. • Moderate amounts of lean meat, skinless chicken, fi sh and reduced-fat dairy products (eg reduced fat milk, cheeses and yoghurt). • Use polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats (eg olive oil and margarine) in preparation of foods. • Preference for foods that are either fresh, steamed, stir-fried, lightly grilled, oven baked or poached. Fried foods and heavily char-grilled foods should be kept to a minimum. • Source local products where available (for list of local producers visit www.katoombachamber.com). • Source organic products/ingredients where available. • Attempt to meet the Sustainability Criteria detailed in Section 1. When contacting prospective caterers it may be useful to explain the Council’s view on healthy eating and the need for healthy and sustainable options to be provided at functions and events. It may be useful to provide prospective caterers with a copy of these Guidelines.
